CLIFTON, NJ — Maintaining a strong, properly staffed Fire Department is among the most important responsibilities of municipal government. Clifton residents deserve confidence that firefighters have the personnel, equipment, and training necessary to respond effectively to emergencies.
City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is calling for a comprehensive Fire Staffing and Retirement Readiness Plan to address anticipated retirements, recruitment needs, and long-term operational requirements.
“Public safety cannot depend on last-minute staffing decisions,” Anderson stated. “Our firefighters deserve dependable support, and taxpayers deserve a city that plans responsibly for the future.”
Anderson recommends that the City Manager and Fire Chief develop a multiyear staffing forecast identifying anticipated retirements, authorized positions, recruitment timelines, training requirements, and operational coverage needs.
The review should also examine how vacancies affect overtime, shift coverage, and the availability of specialized emergency-response personnel.
Anderson proposes evaluating regional training opportunities and cooperative arrangements with neighboring fire departments, while preserving Clifton’s ability to meet its own emergency-response responsibilities.
Any staffing proposal should identify recurring salary and benefit obligations, available grant opportunities, and the long-term financial impact of proposed hiring decisions.
“Reducing expenses should never mean compromising firefighter safety or emergency readiness,” Anderson added. “Effective workforce planning protects both residents and the municipal budget.”
Anderson calls for an annual public staffing and recruitment report, with sensitive operational and personnel information appropriately protected.
“Clifton must anticipate tomorrow’s public safety needs instead of reacting after vacancies create avoidable problems,” Anderson concluded.
