FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLIFTON, NJ — Fire Department overtime is a necessary tool for maintaining emergency coverage, but persistent overtime pressures require careful examination of staffing, scheduling, and operational demands.
City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is proposing a Fire Department Overtime Accountability Review that prioritizes firefighter safety while identifying opportunities for more predictable personnel costs.
“Clifton should never sacrifice emergency readiness to achieve an arbitrary budget target,” Anderson stated. “But responsible government must understand why overtime occurs and whether better planning can reduce avoidable expenses.”
Anderson recommends examining overtime expenditures over multiple fiscal years, distinguishing between emergency incidents, minimum staffing requirements, vacancies, training, leave coverage, and other operational causes.
The review should compare actual expenditures with adopted appropriations using verified municipal budget accounts and documented financial records.
Anderson also proposes assessing whether earlier recruitment, improved retirement forecasting, scheduling adjustments, or administrative efficiencies could address recurring overtime pressures.
Neighboring municipalities’ approaches to regional training and specialized emergency-response cooperation should be evaluated where they offer practical operational benefits.
Any proposed changes must respect applicable collective bargaining agreements, staffing requirements, and professional fire-service standards.
“Firefighters should not be expected to compensate indefinitely for preventable staffing shortages,” Anderson added. “Likewise, taxpayers should not be left without a clear explanation of recurring personnel costs.”
Anderson calls for quarterly public reporting on aggregate overtime trends, staffing vacancies, and corrective measures, without disclosing sensitive deployment information.
“Strong fire protection and sound financial management are complementary responsibilities,” Anderson concluded. “Clifton must deliver both.”
