FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLIFTON, NJ — October 20, 2026 — Following reports of increased federal immigration enforcement activity in Passaic County and an unverified report of ICE activity in Clifton, City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is reaffirming his support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Clifton Police Department, and the men and women entrusted with protecting our communities.
“Public safety begins with respect for the rule of law,” Anderson stated. “I support our police officers and federal immigration agents who carry out their lawful responsibilities, often under difficult and dangerous circumstances. They deserve our respect, professional support, and the resources necessary to perform their duties safely.”
Recent enforcement operations in neighboring Passaic demonstrate the importance of clear communication between federal, state, and local authorities.
Anderson believes Clifton should adopt a practical public safety framework that respects federal immigration authority while recognizing the legal responsibilities and limitations governing New Jersey police departments.
His recommendations include reviewing emergency coordination procedures, strengthening officer safety training, clarifying jurisdictional responsibilities, and ensuring that residents receive accurate information during significant enforcement operations.
Anderson also calls for a transparent review of how state immigration-enforcement restrictions affect local public safety responsibilities, with any proposed changes pursued through lawful legislative channels.
“Supporting ICE and supporting constitutional protections are not competing responsibilities,” Anderson added. “Effective law enforcement requires both accountability and respect for the rights of every individual.”
Anderson emphasized that Clifton must remain focused on preventing crime, protecting families, supporting victims, and maintaining confidence in law enforcement.
“Our commitment must be clear: support lawful enforcement, stand behind our officers, protect our neighborhoods, and uphold the Constitution,” Anderson concluded.
