Anderson Says School Crossing Safety Must Be Treated as a Core Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — Reliable school crossing protection should be a basic expectation for Clifton families. Tafari K. Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, is calling for clearer staffing standards, backup coverage, and public accountability for school crossing guard services.

“Parents should not have to wonder whether a busy school crossing will be staffed when children arrive,” Anderson stated. “Dependable crossing protection is a core public safety responsibility.”

Anderson recommends that the City establish clear procedures for promptly filling absences, reporting uncovered assignments, and notifying appropriate school and police personnel when coverage changes.

He also supports reviewing high-risk intersections with municipal police, school officials, and traffic engineers to determine where crossing guards, markings, signs, or other safety improvements are needed.

Where services are provided under contract, Anderson proposes measurable performance standards and regular reporting on staffing reliability, response to absences, and corrective actions.

“A contract should be judged by whether children are protected, not merely whether invoices are paid,” Anderson said. “Residents deserve dependable service and responsible oversight of every public dollar.”

Anderson encourages accessible reporting channels for families and periodic public updates on how identified crossing concerns are resolved.
