Anderson Calls for Safer Sidewalks and ADA-Compliant Neighborhood Infrastructure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — Damaged sidewalks and inaccessible street corners can make ordinary trips difficult or dangerous, especially for seniors, families with strollers, and residents with disabilities. Tafari K. Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, is calling for a prioritized sidewalk and curb-accessibility improvement plan.

“A neighborhood is only truly accessible when people can travel safely along its sidewalks and cross its streets,” Anderson said. “Maintaining that basic infrastructure should be a municipal priority.”

Anderson proposes an inventory of damaged sidewalks, missing or deficient curb ramps, and locations where pedestrian routes are interrupted. Improvements should be ranked by safety, accessibility, and proximity to schools, parks, transit stops, and business districts.

He recommends coordinating curb-ramp improvements with scheduled roadwork, clarifying maintenance responsibilities for affected property owners, and making the complaint and repair process easier to understand.

The City should evaluate eligible Community Development Block Grant and other infrastructure funding opportunities while observing applicable accessibility requirements and municipal authority.

“Residents deserve a clear explanation of who is responsible for a repair, when work may occur, and what it will cost,” Anderson stated. “Transparency is part of getting the basics right.”

Anderson supports publishing an annual accessibility improvement schedule and reporting completed projects to help residents track progress.
