Anderson Proposes Preventive Maintenance Plan to Protect Clifton Libraries and Public Buildings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — Public libraries serve families, students, seniors, and residents seeking educational opportunities, technology access, and community resources. Protecting these services requires careful planning for the buildings and equipment that support them.

City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is proposing a Municipal Facilities Preservation and Service Continuity Plan to strengthen preventive maintenance and reduce avoidable interruptions to public services.

“Taxpayers have already invested in our public buildings,” Anderson stated. “Responsible government should maintain those investments through careful planning instead of waiting for expensive emergencies.”

Anderson recommends professional condition assessments of major municipal facilities, beginning with heating and cooling equipment, electrical systems, roofing, plumbing, accessibility, and other critical infrastructure.

The assessments should support a five-year maintenance schedule identifying priorities, anticipated replacement needs, and appropriate funding strategies.

Anderson also believes essential public services should have continuity plans when buildings require extensive repairs or renovations.

Nearby communities provide useful examples of library cooperation.

Passaic County’s shared-services inventory identifies library-service arrangements involving Haledon, Hawthorne, and Prospect Park. These partnerships demonstrate opportunities for municipalities to coordinate access to library resources.

Anderson recommends that Clifton evaluate temporary service partnerships, alternative program locations, and expanded digital access when facilities are undergoing major work.

“Residents should not lose access to important services simply because a building requires maintenance,” Anderson added.

He also proposes annual public reporting on municipal building conditions, planned improvements, and completed maintenance projects.

The objective is to preserve community services, extend the useful life of public assets, and make long-term maintenance decisions more transparent.
