FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLIFTON, NJ — October 25, 2026 — Clifton City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is calling for a long-term open space preservation strategy to protect remaining green spaces, strengthen flood resilience, and prevent development from overwhelming neighborhood infrastructure.
“Once open space is lost to development, recovering it becomes extremely difficult and expensive,” Anderson stated. “Clifton must balance economic growth with environmental protection and the quality of life our residents deserve.”
Anderson proposes five municipal priorities:
- Open Space Inventory: Identify remaining undeveloped parcels, environmentally sensitive properties, and potential preservation opportunities.
- Flood Mitigation: Prioritize green infrastructure and preservation of suitable properties that help manage stormwater.
- Responsible Development: Evaluate cumulative traffic, drainage, infrastructure, and neighborhood impacts when considering zoning policy.
- Grant Funding: Pursue New Jersey Green Acres, county open-space funding, and other eligible conservation grants.
- Public Transparency: Publish preservation priorities, potential acquisition costs, and long-term maintenance obligations before committing taxpayer resources.
Anderson recommends evaluating conservation easements and voluntary partnerships with property owners before considering costly acquisitions.
“Preservation should be strategic, financially responsible, and grounded in measurable community benefits,” Anderson explained.
He also supports coordinating municipal planning with regional conservation organizations and neighboring communities where appropriate.
“Clifton’s future depends on decisions we make today,” Anderson concluded. “We can protect our neighborhoods, preserve valuable green spaces, and encourage responsible investment without sacrificing fiscal discipline.”
