FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — DRAFT FOR REVIEW
CLIFTON, N.J. — September 24, 2026 — Clifton City Council candidate Tafari K. Anderson is calling for formal collaboration among the city, Clifton Board of Education and Boys & Girls Club of Clifton to identify practical opportunities for children, seniors and veterans.
The Clifton Board of Education’s August 20 agenda included granting the Boys & Girls Club use of multiple school buildings for before- and after-school childcare during the 2026–27 school year. A presentation listed for the Board’s September 17 meeting reported that district summer programs served more than 1,200 students through academic, enrichment and extended-school-year activities.
These programs are administered by separate organizations, and the available records do not establish that a broader city partnership has been approved. Anderson is proposing that the city evaluate one.
Anderson’s Conservative Position
Local government should strengthen families and community institutions without automatically creating another costly bureaucracy.
Clifton already has public facilities, recreation programs, schools, nonprofit organizations and experienced community partners. Before taxpayers are asked to fund new departments or duplicative programs, the city should determine whether existing resources can be coordinated more effectively.
Anderson recommends that the next Council invite the Board of Education, Recreation Department, Boys & Girls Club and relevant community organizations to conduct a transparent needs-and-capacity review. It should examine:
- Before- and after-school care.
- Recreation, tutoring and career-readiness programs.
- Special-needs and family-support services.
- Senior wellness, technology and social programs.
- Veterans’ activities and service navigation.
- Facility availability and transportation barriers.
- Background checks, insurance and child-safety requirements.
- Program costs, funding sources and measurable outcomes.
The city must also collaborate with the Board of Education when evaluating major development. New residential construction can affect enrollment, classroom capacity, traffic, school transportation and municipal services. Those effects should be assessed before—not after—development decisions are finalized.
Any public-private partnership must preserve parental rights, protect children, maintain viewpoint neutrality and include clear financial controls. Public funds should support defined community services rather than political or ideological programming.
The review should identify existing programs before proposing new spending, publish measurable goals, and require participating organizations to report attendance, outcomes and costs. Programs that do not deliver results should be corrected or discontinued rather than automatically renewed.
The goal is not bigger government. It is smarter cooperation: use existing buildings, reduce duplication, support trusted organizations and measure whether programs deliver results. Any pilot program should begin at a limited scale, publish its costs and expand only after demonstrating clear community value.
Clifton families deserve safe opportunities for their children. Seniors and veterans deserve access to useful community programs. Taxpayers deserve collaboration that stretches existing resources instead of another tax-and-spend initiative.
