Anderson Proposes a “No Surprises” Open Government Standard for Clifton

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — October 23, 2026 — Clifton City Council candidate Tafari Anderson is calling for a “No Surprises” Open Government Standard to give residents timely, understandable access to municipal decisions, meeting agendas, contracts, and official notices.

“Residents should never have to discover major government decisions after they have already been made,” Anderson stated. “Whether the issue involves redevelopment, spending, zoning, or public services, Clifton taxpayers deserve timely information and a meaningful opportunity to participate.”

Building on Clifton’s existing online notices and meeting information, Anderson proposes six improvements:

  1. Centralized Public Meeting Calendar: Create one searchable calendar for City Council, Planning Board, Zoning Board, and other municipal meetings, with links to agendas and supporting documents.
  2. Earlier Agenda Publication: Release complete agendas and available materials as early as practicable, exceeding minimum legal notice requirements whenever possible.
  3. Plain-Language Decision Summaries: Explain significant proposed ordinances, redevelopment agreements, major contracts, and capital expenditures before final action.
  4. Resident Notification System: Offer voluntary email and text alerts for public hearings, zoning applications, redevelopment proposals, budget decisions, and other neighborhood matters.
  5. Permanent Public Records Archive: Maintain a searchable archive of notices, agendas, minutes, ordinances, resolutions, and voting records consistent with applicable retention and disclosure requirements.
  6. Public Accountability Dashboard: Track agenda publication timeliness, meeting attendance, public participation opportunities, and completion of City Council actions.

“Transparency should not depend on whether residents know where to search or which department to contact,” Anderson added. “City Hall should make participation easier, not more complicated.”

Anderson recommends using existing municipal systems wherever practical, with competitive procurement and a public cost-benefit review before purchasing additional technology. The proposal would also include annual reporting on public notification performance, document accessibility, and resident engagement.

“Good government begins with informed citizens,” Anderson concluded. “Clifton deserves a City Hall that welcomes participation, explains its decisions, and treats transparency as a responsibility to every taxpayer.”
