Anderson Calls for “Infrastructure First” Review of Major Development

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — Tafari Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, today outlined a conservative, taxpayer-focused approach to development impact on municipal infrastructure, arguing that Clifton should measure local government by results, transparency, public safety, and respect for the people who pay the bills.

Every significant development can affect roads, drainage, sewers, police, fire, sanitation, parking, and municipal services. Clifton’s planning documents specifically emphasize coordination between land-use policy and efficient public expenditure. Anderson said the question for City Hall is not whether government can spend money on the problem, but whether it can define the problem clearly, set a measurable objective, and show residents what they received for every dollar.

“Clifton residents are willing to support government that does the basics well, protects their families, and respects their money,” Anderson said. “What they should not have to accept is a system where costs rise automatically, responsibility is scattered, and answers arrive only after the bill has already been paid. On development impact on municipal infrastructure, we can be both responsible and effective.”

For major development applications, Anderson is calling for a standardized municipal service impact statement estimating demands on roads, stormwater, sanitary sewer, public safety, parking, and sanitation, together with lawful developer contributions and mitigation measures.

Anderson said the policy should include public milestones, assigned responsibility, and regular reporting so residents can see whether the City is meeting its commitments.

His approach is rooted in a simple principle: local government should concentrate first on core responsibilities. Police, fire protection, roads, drainage, sanitation, infrastructure, transparent finances, and responsive constituent service should come before political vanity projects or programs that cannot demonstrate value. Clifton should also pursue outside grants when they reduce the local burden without creating unsustainable future costs.

Existing taxpayers should not become the silent financing partner for private development. Growth should pay its fair, lawful share of the infrastructure it requires.

Anderson said that standard requires City Hall to distinguish one-time spending from recurring obligations and to disclose the full life-cycle cost of major contracts and capital projects. Where state or federal mandates constrain the City, officials should explain those requirements plainly and pursue the most taxpayer-protective lawful option.

“This is what conservative government should look like in Clifton,” Anderson said. “Spend carefully. Protect the public. Maintain what taxpayers already own. Enforce rules fairly. Encourage private investment. Keep government understandable. And when City Hall makes a promise about development and infrastructure, publish the measure that will tell us whether that promise was kept.”

Anderson said he will continue releasing detailed issue positions so voters can compare specific governing priorities rather than campaign slogans alone. His campaign platform emphasizes fiscal responsibility, public safety, transparent procurement, responsible development, infrastructure planning, and stronger accountability for municipal performance.
