CLIFTON, NJ — For homeowners repeatedly affected by flooding, another storm can mean another round of property damage, costly repairs, and uncertainty about what comes next.
Tafari K. Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, is calling for a coordinated flood mitigation strategy that prioritizes vulnerable neighborhoods, aging drainage infrastructure, and measurable progress.
“Flooding is not simply an inconvenience. It threatens homes, public safety, and the financial security of families who have invested their lives in Clifton,” Anderson stated.
Anderson proposes developing a publicly accessible inventory of recurring flooding locations, drainage deficiencies, and infrastructure projects. The inventory would identify priority improvements based on documented risk, engineering assessments, and potential damage reduction.
His proposal also calls for closer coordination among municipal engineering, public works, emergency management, and county and state agencies where jurisdiction overlaps.
Rather than relying exclusively on emergency repairs, Anderson supports a multiyear capital strategy that includes preventive maintenance, stormwater infrastructure improvements, and available grant funding.
Residents should receive clear information about proposed projects, anticipated timelines, estimated costs, and responsible agencies.
“Taxpayers deserve to know whether government is making measurable progress or simply responding to the same problems after every storm,” Anderson said.
Anderson also recommends establishing accessible reporting channels so residents can document flooding conditions and receive follow-up information.
“Clifton cannot control the weather,” Anderson concluded. “But we can control how responsibly we prepare, maintain our infrastructure, and protect our neighborhoods.”
