CLIFTON, NJ — When development changes how rainwater flows across a property, the consequences can extend far beyond the construction site.
Tafari K. Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, is proposing a more transparent review of stormwater management practices, impervious surface coverage, and the effects of new development on established neighborhoods.
“Residents should not be forced to bear the consequences of poorly planned drainage or inadequate infrastructure,” Anderson stated.
Anderson believes municipal development reviews should clearly explain how proposed projects will manage stormwater, comply with applicable regulations, and affect surrounding properties.
He recommends requiring accessible documentation of drainage analyses, runoff-control measures, maintenance responsibilities, and any infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate development.
Anderson also supports stronger coordination among the Planning Board, municipal engineering staff, and other relevant agencies within their respective legal responsibilities.
The City should periodically evaluate whether existing drainage infrastructure remains adequate as neighborhoods change and impervious surfaces increase.
He emphasized that standards must be applied consistently and within the City’s lawful authority.
“Responsible development means protecting existing residents while allowing appropriate investment and economic growth,” Anderson said.
Anderson recommends public reporting on stormwater-related infrastructure priorities and exploring grants for projects that address longstanding drainage deficiencies.
“Growth should improve Clifton’s future, not create avoidable flooding problems for the families already living here,” Anderson concluded.
