Anderson Supports Neighborhood-Based Parking Standards That Match Reality

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIFTON, NJ — Tafari Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, today outlined a conservative, taxpayer-focused approach to off-street parking shortages, arguing that Clifton should measure local government by results, transparency, public safety, and respect for the people who pay the bills.

The 2026 Master Plan Reexamination specifically reviews off-street parking and proposes updated standards. Parking shortages can spill into residential streets, increase conflict, and undermine businesses when development approvals underestimate actual demand. Anderson said the question for City Hall is not whether government can spend money on the problem, but whether it can define the problem clearly, set a measurable objective, and show residents what they received for every dollar.

Adopt evidence-based parking standards by use and neighborhood, require credible parking management plans, protect residential permit areas, and resist variances that simply transfer private parking demand onto public streets. Anderson said the policy should include public milestones, assigned responsibility, and regular reporting so residents can see whether the city is meeting its commitments.

A parking space on a site plan is not a minor technical detail when the alternative is a nightly search for parking in front of your own home. Anderson said that standard requires City Hall to distinguish one-time spending from recurring obligations and to disclose the full life-cycle cost of major contracts and capital projects. Where state or federal mandates constrain the City, officials should explain those requirements plainly and pursue the most taxpayer-protective lawful option.

“This is what conservative government should look like in Clifton,” Anderson said. “Spend carefully. Protect the public. Maintain what taxpayers already own. Enforce rules fairly. Encourage private investment. Keep government understandable. And when City Hall makes a promise about off-street parking shortages, publish the measure that will tell us whether that promise was kept.”
