FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLIFTON, NJ — Tafari Anderson, candidate for Clifton City Council, is calling for a tougher, more transparent standard for major development so growth strengthens Clifton instead of shifting new costs onto existing residents.
Redevelopment and land-use proposals continue to reshape Clifton. Anderson said development can expand the tax base and attract private investment, but those benefits must be weighed against traffic, flooding, school enrollment, public safety, parking, sewer capacity, and neighborhood character.
“Development is not automatically progress,” Anderson said. “If a project creates more congestion, flooding pressure, service demands, and long-term costs for existing taxpayers, City Hall needs to account for that before approving it.”
Anderson is proposing cumulative-impact reviews for major projects, realistic traffic and drainage studies, stronger enforcement of density and bulk standards, and clear analysis of municipal infrastructure and service costs.
He also wants residents to receive information early enough to participate, rather than learning critical details after major decisions are effectively settled.
“Private investment should be welcomed when it makes Clifton stronger,” Anderson said. “But taxpayers should not become the silent financing partner for development that requires expensive public improvements.”
Anderson said the City should favor projects consistent with its Master Plan, protect stable neighborhoods, and require lawful mitigation or developer contributions when projects create identifiable infrastructure demands.
“The choice is not development or no development,” Anderson said. “The choice is responsible growth or careless growth. Clifton deserves development that improves our tax base and quality of life without sacrificing existing neighborhoods.”
