FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — DRAFT FOR REVIEW
CLIFTON, N.J. — September 24, 2026 — Clifton City Council candidate Tafari K. Anderson supports strengthening the Clifton Fire Department while calling for complete transparency concerning the costs, staffing needs and long-term obligations associated with a proposed federal grant.
The September 15 City Council agenda included tentative acceptance of a FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant that could support the hiring of as many as 16 firefighters. SAFER grants are intended to help fire departments increase or maintain the number of trained frontline firefighters available to their communities.
The Council record describes the city’s action as tentative. The final award amount, duration, local contribution and continuing municipal costs have not yet been fully confirmed publicly.
Anderson’s Conservative Position
Public safety is a fundamental responsibility of local government. Clifton must maintain the personnel, training and equipment necessary to protect residents, businesses and first responders.
Support for firefighters must also be accompanied by honest budgeting. Grant-funded positions can create future salary, health-benefit, pension, equipment and operational obligations after federal funding ends. Taxpayers deserve to understand those commitments before permanent expenditures are added to the municipal budget.
Anderson is calling for the city to release:
- The final grant award and funding period.
- The number and type of positions to be created.
- Clifton’s required contribution during each grant year.
- Projected salary, benefit, pension, training and equipment costs.
- The estimated municipal cost after federal funding expires.
- Objective staffing and response-time information supporting the proposal.
- A plan for measuring improvements in emergency response and firefighter safety.
A responsible conservative approach does not reflexively reject outside funding that can improve public safety. It makes certain that grant money addresses a documented need and does not conceal an unaffordable future obligation.
The next Council should integrate fire staffing into a multiyear public-safety and capital plan. That plan should examine overtime, recruitment, retention, station coverage, equipment replacement and emergency-response standards together instead of treating each expense as an isolated decision.
Clifton should also disclose the assumptions used to estimate future costs and explain how the city would respond if grant funding ends earlier than expected. A transparent contingency plan protects firefighters, residents and taxpayers from abrupt service or budget decisions.
Clifton’s firefighters deserve adequate staffing, modern training and dependable equipment. Clifton taxpayers deserve clear numbers and a sustainable plan. Effective government must deliver both.
Anderson also supports regular public reporting on recruitment, academy completion, vacancies, overtime and response performance. Residents should be able to determine whether additional staffing produces the promised improvement in emergency coverage. Transparent performance information protects public safety while helping the Council make disciplined decisions when future budgets are prepared.
